The early morning summer light matured gradually, throwing long grey edged shadows across Hampstead Heath, the North London playground for the middle classes. This particular Friday morning, at a few minutes past five o’clock, a small group of well dressed gentlemen assembled on the west side of the Heath. They were there for a purpose, a deadly purpose, an illegal purpose. There was to be a duel and such an event had not been recorded as having taken place in England since 1852.
